Sunderland’s summer planning is gathering pace under sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, with Dennis Cirkin’s contract situation and potential squad changes coming into sharper focus as the season enters its decisive phase.

Cirkin is out of contract at the end of the campaign and has only just returned from injury. Régis Le Bris said it is too early to discuss the issue publicly, and the left-back has stressed he remains relaxed and focused on the pitch.

The champions of Türkiye have used him mainly at right-back, though he has covered left-back and wide roles, delivering 7 goals and 7 assists in 64 games, with 1 goal and 6 assists this season. The report added Sunderland made “serious attempts” last month, and any fee for a renewed move is unclear.

In separate developments, reports in Iceland say HK midfielder Thorvaldur Smari Jonsson will head to Wearside this month for a trial at the Academy of Light. The teenager made 11 appearances in the country’s second tier last season and is viewed as a developing prospect.
