Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland are close to agreeing a long-term contract with 19-year-old goalkeeper Matty Young. Talks are advanced on a four-year deal with an option of a further 12 months.
The agreement is not final until signed, but the outlook is considered very positive as the club move to secure a leading academy product under sporting director Florent Ghisolfi.
Young joined Sunderland aged seven and signed his first professional deal in November 2023. He impressed on loan at Darlington, winning their young player award, then spent two seasons with Salford City. He has made 75 league appearances for Salford and 89 senior outings overall.
That senior experience has strengthened Sunderland’s belief in his long-term potential. He has also represented England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level.
A third Salford loan is not expected next season, with a new environment viewed as the next step at a bigger club, fanbase and stadium. Plymouth Argyle are keen, while Cardiff City and MK Dons have also been linked.
Robin Roefs is established as number one, while Anthony Patterson is weighing up his future amid interest from several clubs. Melker Ellborg is part of the senior group, and another loan for Young looks likely in the short term.
