Matty Young has completed a loan move to Huddersfield Town, giving the Sunderland goalkeeper his first taste of League One football.
As reported by Sunderland Echo, the 19-year-old made well over 50 senior appearances across two seasons at Salford City, who missed out on promotion on the final day before losing to Notts County in the play-offs last term.
Shortly before the play-off final, Young signed a new long-term deal on Wearside running to summer 2030. The youth international is viewed as a leading academy prospect and director of football Florent Ghisolfi described the move as a crucial step, crediting the goalkeeping department and expressing excitement to follow his progress in 2026/27.
Huddersfield director of football Chris Markham thanked Sunderland for their trust and described Young as one of the country’s most highly rated young goalkeepers. He stressed the benefit of an early pre-season integration, highlighted his club and international experience for his age, and praised his attitude, application and presence.
Head coach Martin Drury said Young’s qualities and hunger stood out, and that he was eager to play for Town. He added that the keeper will work with Sunderland to further his development, with head of goalkeeping Chris Elliott overseeing him at Canalside to help ensure a positive contribution next season.
