Julian Alvarez has once again become the hottest topic in the transfer market this summer, especially after he publicly admitted his desire to leave Atletico Madrid.
Alvarez’s comments came in the wake of Argentina’s win over Austria in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, with his statement widely being seen as a push to engineer a move to Barcelona.
In a recent interaction, former Atletico Madrid and Argentina forward Maxi Rodriguez offered his thoughts on Alvarez’s situation.

Asked whether Alvarez’s statements surprised him, Rodriguez said (h/t MARCA), “I don’t know the exact situation well. Each side will always try to defend its own interests. The best thing is to reach a solution.”
“The fan always wants the best for his club, and Julian will also want the best for himself. Matters that arise must be handled responsibly. But I can’t talk much about the topic because I don’t know the situation well,” he added.
When asked whether a resolution would be difficult to find, the former Atleti man declined to take any definitive stance.
“I don’t know exactly what the positions of the parties are. It’s hard to conduct an analysis or speak from the outside,” he concluded.
Alvarez made his intentions clear after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria, stating he had spoken to Atletico’s hierarchy and believed the best outcome for everyone was for him to leave.

Atletico, however, have remained defiant. The club have repeatedly insisted the forward is not for sale, pointing to its release clause and even threatening to report Barcelona to FIFA over their pursuit.
CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has been particularly vocal, expressing his fury at both the player’s comments and Barcelona’s perceived role in engineering them. Alvarez, for his part, believes he has been betrayed by Gil.
For Barcelona, the financial obstacle remains significant. Their initial €100 million proposal was rejected, and Atletico continue to point to a release clause that no club can realistically meet.
It seems the Catalans may be content to play the waiting game, hoping that Alvarez’s public push for an exit will gradually pile pressure on Atletico to soften their stance as the window progresses.
