Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital with a wrist injury after a freak fall during England’s celebrations following their World Cup last-16 win over co-hosts Mexico, England manager Thomas Tuchel said. The victory at the Azteca Stadium sealed a quarter-final place.
England edged a five-goal thriller as Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane converted a penalty in front of a 100,000 crowd. They played for more than 40 minutes with 10 men after Jarell Quansah was sent off on VAR review for a challenge on Jesus Gallardo.
Henderson, an unused substitute, fell over an advertising board while celebrating with team-mates in front of travelling England supporters. According to Sunderland Echo, he will not travel back to England’s Kansas City base and will receive treatment in a Mexico City hospital.
Tuchel described mixed emotions, praising his players’ mentality and heart and saying they found a way to win and overcame every obstacle. He called it a very special night.
He added he was exhausted and saddened by Henderson’s injury, which he described as serious, and said the midfielder was in hospital. Tuchel admitted he did not yet know the next steps and had only been told by the doctor that Henderson was being treated.
