LeicesterMercury.co.uk notes Leicester City’s 2-0 win at Bristol City may hinge on one moment, Jakub Stolarczyk’s penalty save after a touchline message from Fran Vieites, with Gary Rowett’s two teams plan also paying off.
Early in the second half at 2-0, City conceded a penalty, yet Stolarczyk denied Emil Riis and they allowed no shot in the final half hour. Vieites relayed guidance before Bristol City’s first spot-kick of the season, and Riis had gone the same way on three Preston efforts.
Rowett split the contest into a 60-minute side and a 30-minute side, keeping quality in reserve. Late introductions of Harry Winks, Ricardo Pereira and Patson Daka lifted possession from 37 to 46 per cent and reduced the visitors’ territory.
Set-pieces told again, Jordan James supplying a free-kick for Ben Nelson’s header. Half of City’s goals under Rowett are from dead balls, with coach Andy Hughes credited, and they sit joint-seventh for set-piece goals on 13 despite ranking 17th for expected goals from them.
With James advanced, Oliver Skipp anchored midfield alone and excelled, clearing at the far post and easing past pressure to start attacks. It is hard to argue City are better without Winks, yet Skipp seems to thrive with sole responsibility.
Despite the lowest attendance in 12 years, noise grew at the King Power and chants for Rowett were frequent. It is only one win, and while talk over his future if City stay up persists, ending those runs offers optimism.
