Les Bleus out to continue perfect start
Didier Deschamps and France will look to continue their perfect start to the World Cup today as they face Iraq in Philadelphia. Les Bleus have a superb squad at their disposal and made something of a statement as they beat Senegal 3-1 in their tournament opener, with Kylian Mbappe at the double and Bradley Barcola also getting in on the act as Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for the Lions of Teranga.
But they do not sit atop the group as it stands, after Norway put four past Iraq in their own opening fixture. The Lions of Mesopotamia put in an absolutely error-strewn performance that day, and things will get no easier for them here as they bid to avoid an ignominious early exit from the tournament.
Mbappe came into this match hoping to break Miroslav Klose’s World Cup goalscoring record, but Lionel Messi has pipped him to the punch by scoring the opener in Argentina vs Austria. As it stands, though, a hat-trick could be enough to see him top the pile.
