Frankfurt battle to hard-earned stalemate with Napoli

Eintracht Frankfurt's European odyssey in this Champions League campaign took them to Naples for a meeting with the Serie A champions SSC Napoli tonight. In the end, neither side managed to break the deadlock in a 0-0 stalemate.

The Hessen club came under a barrage of fire shortly after kick-off in what would ultimately be a scoreless first-half. RB Leipzig loanee Eljif Elmas skipped past Rasmus Kristensen and forced a fine save out of Michael Zetterer who sprawled down to the low shot.

Napoli continued to target the left flank and continued to get joy through Elmas. The North Macedonian whipped in a dangerous freekick from which Buongiorno fouled Burkardt. Still, credit must be given to Frankfurt who limited the hosts to the solitary early chance.

Despite averaging around 30% possession up to half-time, Frankfurt grew into the game after the restart. Amir Rahmani was forced to haul Burkardt to ground and revive a yellow card - had he not, then the Frankfurt striker may have been in with a route to goal.

Nearing the hour, Nnamdi Collins proved crucial in cutting out André-Frank Zambo Anguissa's through ball. At the other end, Kristensen fired over the bar albeit the Portuguese arbiter's whistle had sounded for a foul on Miguel Gutiérrez.

Both sides replenished their attacks as Napoli called upon David Neres, while Ansgar Knauff replaced Bahoya on the left. The former Borussia Dortmund winger almost made an instant impact when the ball broke to him in the box but Milinkovic-Savic made a big parry.

Napoli regained control and continued to force openings as Theate cleared the ball off Anguissa's foot in the box. Final attempts from McTominay including two desperate penalty appeals couldn't breach the Frankfurt defence who held out for a valuable point in Naples.
