Eintracht Frankfurt secured a narrow victory over 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday, with Arnaud Kalimuendo’s second-half header proving decisive. Despite dominating possession for much of the match, Frankfurt struggled to break down a disciplined Heidenheim side and were forced to defend deep after Robin Koch was sent off late in the game.
Here is our fully detailed match report:
Eintracht Frankfurt dominated possession against 1. FC Heidenheim, but clear chances were extremely hard to come by in a cagey first half.
The visitors set up with a compact defensive shape, keeping the spaces tight and focusing primarily on protecting their goal. Heidenheim’s apparent plan was simple: keep the score level for as long as possible and look to strike on the counter late in the game.
The approach worked perfectly before the break. In fact, the first half offered almost no attacking threat from either side. After 40 minutes, the expected goals statistics summed up the lack of action: just 0.02 xG for Frankfurt and 0.00 for Heidenheim!
The hosts returned from halftime with noticeably greater urgency - and it quickly paid off.
In the 52nd minute, a long free kick into the box created chaos in the Heidenheim penalty area. Arnaud Kalimuendo rose highest to meet the delivery with a header, giving Frankfurt a 1-0 lead.
Heidenheim thought they had produced a stunning response in the 68th minute: Substitute Sirlord Conteh finished off a lightning-fast counterattack with a delightful chipped finish over Michael Zetterer.
However, the celebrations were short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside following a review.
The match took another twist in the 73rd minute when Frankfurt captain Robin Koch received his second yellow card and was sent off. That left Frankfurt to navigate the final 20 minutes with ten men, setting up a tense finish as Heidenheim searched for a late equaliser.
Frankfurt did indeed hold on to their narrow lead, as they focused on defending instead of attacking - and Heidenheim were not able to put together enough momentum to get the equaliser.
Final result: Frankfurt 1-1 Heidenheim.
