Welshman sees a clear correlation between his performances and those of Manchester City’s talisman striker

Harry Wilson believes the uptick in his goalscoring output this season is simply down to the fact that he is playing more than he has in bygone campaigns.

The Welshman has been in fine form this season, with 16 goal involvements to his name after 29 league appearances, the most of any Fulham player.

He is already enjoying his best goalscoring season in the English top flight to date despite having seven matches left to play, and is one assist away from matching his best playmaking record.

His impressive numbers this campaign came in spite of Fulham’s slow start to the campaign, which manager Marco Silva has managed to rise above and drag the Cottagers into the European conversation.

But Wilson insists that his improvement this season is not down to a tactical revolution from Silva. Rather, he believes it is simply down to the fact that he has played more minutes in this campaign than any other in a Fulham shirt.

He has played 2,279 league minutes thus far in the campaign, 615 more than his previous record.

“I don’t think so, our relationship has always been really good,” Wilson told BBC Sport, asked whether Silva had tweaked something tactically to get the best out of him.

“I don’t think anything has drastically changed from him to me. It is just that natural confidence that has come into my game because I’ve been playing well, that happens with any player.

“The biggest change for me over the course of the season is minutes played. If you look at the end of the season, the players that are top of the goals, top of the assists for whatever teams, they’re the players that play the most minutes. That has been the biggest change.

He continued, comparing his own fortunes to Erling Haaland’s. The Norwegian leads Manchester City and the Premier League for goals, and ahs played more league minutes than any other outfielder in the squad.

“The other players from each team that are leading the team in whatever are the ones that play the most minutes. You look at Haaland at City, his goal record is incredible and he spends probably the most minutes on the pitch.

“That is testament to him, he keeps himself fit, he’s rarely injured. It is also down to the manager who keeps him on, because he knows he only needs a moment, and I think I’m that type of player.

“Things might not be going well, but I feel like all I need is a moment to create or score, and I think that is true for the rest of the attacking players that are on that list.”
