Gabriel Brazão will play no further part for Santos this year after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder in Belo Horizonte. The club said in a statement the operation was successful and that he will begin his recovery in the coming days.

The procedure was performed by Dr Sérgio Campolina, Cruzeiro’s head of medical, who had previously operated on the goalkeeper’s knee. Brazão will recuperate at home before starting physiotherapy with Santos.

The plan is for him to recover without being rushed, with the aim of returning at full fitness next season. Santos have 11 Campeonato Brasileiro matches remaining this year.

Having made 50 appearances and conceded 63 goals, Brazão was replaced by Diógenes in the last match, against Remo. The new starter erred for Remo’s goal and is likely to face pressure after the FIFA break, with former first-choice João Paulo the immediate back-up.

Teenager João Pedro, 18, is currently third choice and is considered a high-potential prospect, though the club are cautious about promoting him now. Rodrigo Falcão completes the senior goalkeeping group.
