City move to within two points of top spot with fine Newcastle win

Nico O’Reilly was the star of the show, scoring both goals either side of a Lewis Hall equaliser for the Magpies.

After early domination of the ball, O’Reilly opened the scoring with a low drive from 20 yards out that was too hot for Nick Pope to handle.

In what was set up to be a thriller, Newcastle were level just seven minutes later thanks to a deflected Hall strike that gave Gianluigi Donnarumma no chance.

No matter, the Blues responded emphatically with O’Reilly expertly nodding in a deep cross before the half hour mark.

We continued to have the better of things from that point, with both Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo going close on numerous occasions.

Instead, we were forced to grind out the result in difficult second half conditions as the visitors threw everything at us.
