Gennaro Gattuso’s first few days in charge of the Italy squad ‘went beyond expectations,’ said assistant Luigi Riccio, ahead of the debut against Estonia.
It kicks off at the Stadio di Bergamo at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).
The 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign began with a painful 3-0 loss in Norway and 2-0 win over Moldova, leading to the dismissal of coach Luciano Spalletti.
Although that was in June, Gattuso had to wait until this week to start work with the players.

“It was not easy, but at the same time it has been very stimulating,” assistant Riccio told RAI Sport.
“We got to know a group of a very high level, and the first few days went beyond expectations.”
Gianluca Scamacca was forced to pull out due to a knee issue, but Italy are starting an attack-minded 4-2-3-1 formation with both Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean upfront.
“They proved during the week that they can play together, so it is an extra tactical solution we can draw on,” added Gattuso’s staff member.
“It was very difficult to pick the names for the squad, but we have plenty of choices for this evening’s line-up. The enthusiasm and availability of the lads gives us the opportunity to choose.”
No matter the result today, Italy are playing catch-up with Norway, who already have 12 points from four games played.
Their next opponents, Israel, also have six points from three matches in Group I.
