Mario Gila and his camp have ended discussions over a new Lazio deal, with AC Milan and Napoli circling, Gazzetta suggests. The decision has been communicated to the club’s hierarchy.

The Spaniard signed a five year contract in 2022 after leaving Real Madrid. Now 25, he has become one of Serie A’s standout defenders, yet his terms have not been revisited and he remains among the lowest earners on €1.1 million net a year. His agent had recently indicated there was no rush to negotiate and that he was content to honour the agreement.

Lazio must now decide whether to sell this summer or risk losing him for free next year. With Real Madrid due 50 percent of any fee, the club are unlikely to entertain low bids.

Milan have recently emerged as frontrunners. Their pursuit is linked to sporting director Igli Tare’s wish to reunite with the defender he brought to Lazio four years ago, and Massimiliano Allegri is also an admirer.

Napoli are trying to overtake Milan in the race. While the Rossoneri have been dragged into the Champions League battle, the Partenopei have practically sealed next season’s place, giving them an early start on summer plans.

Napoli have also identified Maurizio Sarri as first choice to replace Antonio Conte if he decides to leave, though their interest in Gila does not hinge on the coaching situation.
