New signing Nico Gonzalez has revealed how his move to City came with his dad’s own special seal of approval.
The Spanish midfielder completed his switch from Portuguese side FC Porto earlier this week, putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal.
Gonzalez became City’s fourth capture of the winter transfer window, following the last month’s arrivals of Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush.
It’s fair to say that football – and City - runs in the 23-year-old’s family.
Nico’s Dad Fran carved out a legendary status for himself over the course of a distinguished career with Deportivo La Coruna before then going on to spend a couple of years working a coach here at City.
And Nico revealed how his father had told his son that a move to City would be the best possible thing in terms of helping elevate his own career to the next level.
“He was here [at City] two years. That is why he always recommended that if I had the chance I should come here,” Gonzalez said.
“He always talks so well about Manchester, the city and obviously the team.
“He told me that I will enjoy it a lot here and I will be so happy here.
“He loved living here and I even visited once, and I really liked the city.
“About the club, the first thing he told me is that the people and the place are amazing and the best he’s seen.
“I think I will enjoy it a lot.”
Gonzalez also touched upon how his father’s own vast experience in the game had proved invaluable in inspiring and helping shape own career to date.
What’s more, he revealed how joining City had also helped one of his father’s long held wishes come true.
“Obviously my Dad has always helped me so much,” Nico added.
“He's always tried to take the best out of me and try to advise me in everything he could.
“And I think that that has helped me a lot and has helped me to make the right decisions.
“And he always told me that to come here would be the best thing.
“Even a few years ago, he always said that he wished me to play here!
“So now he's so happy and I'm proud.”
