Just a year ago, the German international was considered a potential departure at Bayern. Told he might struggle for minutes, Goretzka was widely seen as a candidate for the transfer list. But under new head coach Vincent Kompany, the 30-year-old turned things around in emphatic fashion.
“I’m not planning to leave. Why would I?” Goretzka told Welt am Sonntag. “My plan is definitely to play for Bayern next season.”
Goretzka, whose current contract runs until the summer of 2026, played 40 competitive matches this season and reclaimed his spot in the national team setup. He credits Bayern and his surroundings for his resurgence.
“I feel incredibly comfortable at this club and in this city. I love Bayern München, the people here, and my teammates. We have a great group,” he said. “This club deserves to win titles, and I believe something big is taking shape again. I definitely see myself as part of that.”
Though Goretzka remains committed, a contract extension is not currently on the table, according to Sky Germany. That could leave his future wide open in the 2025 summer transfer window.
The midfielder also spoke candidly about being left out of Germany’s squad for the Euro 2024 tournament on home soil, an omission he called “the biggest disappointment” of his career. Before being recalled by Julian Nagelsmann, the two had a conversation to clear the air.
“We couldn’t just move on without addressing things,” Goretzka said. “It was obvious that we needed to talk.”
He also credited his inner circle, including family and close friends, for helping him stay grounded during a tough stretch, and singled out Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß for support.
“Uli always had a good sense of when to reach out. We had many important conversations. He’s always been there for me.”
