According to Sunderland Echo, Granit Xhaka said he is only just getting started after being named Sunderland’s men’s Player of the Season on Wednesday, having captained the side in an impressive return to the top flight.
Speaking at the Beacon of Light awards night, he expressed confidence this season would be a success and that there is more to come from him and the group. He stressed balance, humility and using his experience to help younger team-mates.
Xhaka highlighted the two derby wins over Newcastle United as his standout moments of the campaign, and he praised the supporters for their backing at every game.
Looking ahead, with a European place on the line on the final day at Chelsea on Sunday, he urged Sunderland to keep doing what has made them strong. He said the squad know what is required, and that if they win they understand what they could achieve.
Goalkeeper Robin Roefs was named men’s Young Player of the Season, and Chris Rigg won men’s Goal of the Season for his strike against Aston Villa. Dan Ballard received the Foundation of Light Community Player award, while Brian Brobbey’s late winner at Newcastle was the LiveScore Moment That Mattered.
Emily Scarr was Women’s Player of the Season, with Katy Watson taking the Young Player award and Katie Kitching landing Women’s Goal of the Season for her effort against Durham.
In the academy, Finn Geragusian was U21 Player of the Season, Finlay Holcroft won U18 Player of the Season and Charlie Scorer earned the Junior award. Club historian Rob Mason received the Lifetime Achievement award for his work preserving and celebrating Sunderland’s history.
