Sunderland’s players flooded social media after their comeback Tyne-Wear derby win at St James’ Park. Granit Xhaka led the reaction with the four words, "This one means everything".
The victory followed an early setback, then a resolute second half. Chemsdine Talbi, at 20 years and 317 days, became the youngest Sunderland player to score against Newcastle in the Premier League. According to Sunderland Echo, many of the posts focused on gratitude to the travelling support.
Goalkeeper Melker Ellborg shared a photo of the away end and thanked fans. Omar Alderete uploaded a celebratory image captioned "+3" with red and white symbols and a clenched fist.
Lutsharel Geertruida struck a more pointed tone, hinting that Tyne and Wear belongs to red and white. Sunderland are unbeaten in their last 11 league meetings with Newcastle, who have not won this derby in the league since 2011 and not at home since 2010.
Brian Brobbey, the match-winner, replied to Xhaka’s post with "Yess my captain", while other comments labelled the result historic. Xhaka’s visible first-half frustration made the comeback feel even starker as teammates and supporters revelled.
