Grêmio’s trip to Atlético-MG offers a chance to ease pressure on Luís Castro and end a 14-month wait for three straight wins. According to Globo.com, victory would be their first such run since June 2025.

In 2025 they beat Sportivo Luqueño 1-0 in the Sudamericana group stage, then Bahia 1-0 in the league, before a 2-0 win over Juventude on 1 June 2025. After the Club World Cup pause, Mano Menezes’ side stalled, unable even to record consecutive wins, with isolated positives punctuated by draws and defeats.

This season, following a long World Cup break, Castro’s team went six games without a win and exited in the Sudamericana play-offs. They now have back-to-back victories over Mirassol in the Copa do Brasil and São Paulo in the Brasileirão. A third on Sunday would be a first for the Tricolor under Castro this year.

Castro has favoured three holding midfielders and no classic playmaker, but he will be without Villasanti, who has been left out of the trip to Belo Horizonte. The team also aim to marry performances with results. The win over São Paulo lifted Grêmio three places.

They sit 14th on 25 points, three clear of Santos, the first team in the Z-4. Sunday’s match kicks off at 16:00 at Arena MRV. Ahead, the Copa do Brasil brings two Gre-Nais in the quarter-finals, the first on Thursday 27 August at 20:00 at Beira-Rio, with Bragantino away in the league before that.
