Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler has opened up about his growing influence at the club and his strong bond with teammates and coaches in what has been a truly defining season for the young Turkish talent.

The 20-year-old has been one of the brightest revelations under Xabi Alonso, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet.

With three goals and three assists in eight La Liga matches, Guler has been instrumental in Madrid’s attacking rhythm, forming an exceptional partnership with Kylian Mbappé, who currently leads the team’s scoring charts.

Connection with Mbappe

Speaking to L’Équipe Magazine, Guler shared his admiration for Mbappé and explained why their understanding on the pitch works so well.

“Mbappe? Some say he drops back too much into midfield, but I think we should let him play wherever he wants,” he said.

“His talent should be given free rein. If he moves into midfield and drops back a little, it’s not for nothing.

“He has the knowledge to do that, he understands the demands of the game.”

Guler also highlighted how their connection translates effortlessly during matches. “His qualities and mine are in harmony.

“We understand each other well, the relationship is smooth. Sometimes we talk before the game and say, ‘Today, we have to do this or that.’ And sometimes, a glance is enough.”

Their chemistry has drawn comparisons with one of football’s most iconic duos – Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil and Guler admitted that while he appreciates such parallels, he remains grounded.

“I like the comparisons between Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil and Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler.

“They’ve achieved great things, but significant success is always achieved by a team, never just two players,” he explained.

Guler also reflected on his early challenges at Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti, who gave him limited minutes last season but immense belief.

“Carlo Ancelotti is one of the greatest coaches in history. We mustn’t forget that he told the press that one day I would become one of the best midfielders in the world.”

When asked about his mindset upon joining the club, Guler revealed that he had been mentally prepared for a slow start.

“When I transferred to Real Madrid, I knew I was at the biggest club in the world. But from my first training session, I knew I had the quality to play here.

“I had no doubt I would be successful here. Juni Calafat (head of scouting) explained the plan to me from the very beginning.

“He told me the first year would be difficult because, ‘it couldn’t be any different for a young player who’s only experienced Türkiye.’

“He also added that I was coming here to succeed players like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Everything was clear and sincere.”

On Alonso and future ambitions

Now, under Xabi Alonso, Guler feels revitalised and more confident than ever. “Alonso? I’m convinced we’re heading in the right direction.

“I don’t know exactly how long it will take, but we’ll be ready when we really need to be,” he said.

Having already lifted the UEFA Champions League in his debut season, Guler’s ambitions remain sky-high.

“Winning the Champions League once? What we’ve achieved doesn’t count for me, we have to go for another title,” he concluded.
