FLW takes a look at Gustavo Hamer's situation at Sheffield United, and if he is likely to stay at Bramall Lane.
Gustavo Hamer has been with Sheffield United for nearly three years, joining the club while they were in the Premier League from Coventry City, just months after the Sky Blues were beaten in the Championship play-off final by Luton Town.
The Blades spent £15m on the Dutch winger, and he has gone on to make nearly 120 appearances for the South Yorkshire outfit, playing a crucial role in their push for promotion last season. However, he was once again on the losing side in the play-off final, this time against Sunderland.
It was a moment that proved decisive, as his side struggled to recover from the heartache of their last-minute defeat to the Black Cats. They won just one of their first nine games, with Ruben Selles facing the sack in September before Chris Wilder returned to the club.
While improvements have been made, promotion looks unlikely this season, and now Football League World has taken a look at the situation surrounding Hamer's future at Sheffield United, and how likely he is to stay at Bramall Lane past this summer.
According to Capology's estimates, the Blades pay the 28-year-old £30,000-a-week as a base salary, while it is also calculated that he earns a further £7,500-a-week through bonuses. This would make him one of the top earners at the club, and it is clear to see why this would be the case.

He has already reached double figures in assists in the Championship this season, despite a difficult start to the campaign, and he has been one of the key players for Wilder as Sheffield United chase down an unlikely top six finish in 2025/26.
When he joined the Blades in 2023, Hamer put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract in S2, and he is coming up to having just 12 months left on that deal.
Therefore, this is a really challenging summer for Sheffield United, and conversations will be had about his current contract, and whether a new deal can be agreed between the two parties.
Given the Blades' current position in the Championship table, it seems incredibly unlikely that they are going to challenge for the play-offs in the final weeks of the season, and it is highly probable that they will start next season in the second tier.
Given Hamer's age, he may see this summer as one of his final opportunities to push for a move to the Premier League, or another top flight division in Europe. Therefore, these final games of 2025/26 may be his last in the red-and-white of Sheffield United.

The Blades may want to cut their losses with the 28-year-old before his contract comes to an end, and bring in some cash for the versatile midfielder. Hamer may be reluctant to sign an extension at Bramall Lane, and after significant interest from abroad in January, it may be tough to keep him in South Yorkshire.
Despite this, Sheffield United will be keen to keep their number eight at the club, and they may only agree to sell him on if they bring in a significant fee for him. Yet, it would not be a surprise to see the player push for a move away.
