Hal Robson-Kanu has praised Luke O'Nien after the Sunderland defender helped the club secure Europa League qualification. The former Premier League forward said in a LinkedIn post that O'Nien's journey is a powerful example.
O'Nien has been central to Sunderland's resurgence, arriving in League One and playing a key role in promotion to the Premier League.
The former Wycombe Wanderers midfielder has also featured at full-back and centre-back, with his adaptability and leadership valued in the dressing room.
His path has been unconventional, from release by Watford to non-league, before earning a move to Wearside in 2018. He then had to fight for his future after a poor debut against Charlton Athletic, ultimately winning supporters over.
The message celebrated his resilience, recalling how his father contacted EFL clubs for a chance and stressing the value of persistence when doubt is loud. It framed O'Nien's story as a lesson in perseverance at 31 and lauded the scale of his journey.
