Hal Robson-Kanu has praised Luke O'Nien after the Sunderland defender helped the club secure Europa League qualification. In a LinkedIn post, the former Premier League forward hailed the 31-year-old's journey and attitude.
He highlighted how O'Nien was released by Watford 12 years ago, dropped into non-league and, with his father contacting EFL clubs, eventually earned a chance that he seized. Robson-Kanu framed the story as proof that persistence can outlast doubt.
O'Nien joined Sunderland in 2018, having previously been at Wycombe Wanderers, and initially arrived as a midfielder. He later adapted to full-back and centre-back, with his versatility and leadership underpinning the Black Cats' rise.
After a difficult debut against Charlton Athletic, he fought to establish himself and became a fans' favourite for mentality, commitment and a team-first approach. His influence has grown across Sunderland's climb from League One to the Premier League.
Robson-Kanu's message celebrated that ascent, from early setbacks to sustained influence on Wearside. It read as a tribute to perseverance and to a player who kept showing up long before any applause.
