Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park. Arne Slot’s side extended their unbeaten run, having also secured a mid-week Champions League win against Atletico Madrid, keeping their place at the top of the table. Everton, sitting sixth after four games, gave a spirited performance, with Idrissa Gueye striking just before the hour mark, though it proved only a consolation.
While the result keeps Liverpool on course in the title race, the performance highlighted concerns over certain individuals, with Cody Gakpo again failing to make the impact expected of a £150,000-per-week player.
Cody Gakpo’s struggles were evident throughout the Merseyside derby. He managed just one shot, which was off target, lost possession 11 times, was beaten in one-on-one situations twice, and conceded a foul. Slot’s patience ran out in the 60th minute as he replaced Gakpo with Florian Wirtz, signalling that the Dutchman’s place in the starting XI is under serious threat.
With Alexander Isak also available from the bench, Liverpool now face difficult decisions about their attacking options. Slot has invested heavily in his forward line, and Gakpo’s poor run leaves him as the most likely candidate to make way for the new arrivals.
Despite Liverpool winning every game this season, the team has yet to deliver consistently dominant performances. If the Reds are to hit their peak form, Gakpo may need to step aside to allow Wirtz or Isak a regular starting role.

Liverpool supporters did not hold back during the match, criticising Gakpo on social media. One fan said:
“Another said, Gakpo is upsetting to watch this season, what happened?”
Others echoed similar sentiments. “Alexis and Gakpo have been absolutely woeful today,” wrote one supporter, while another remarked, “Gakpo already ruined about 3 attacks.”
Predictability was a key criticism, with one fan noting, “Gakpo so predictable, change it up a little brother. Everyone knows your move.” The overall sentiment was summed up by a final post: “Gakpo, absolutely shocking again.”
Liverpool’s forward options now present Arne Slot with a clear choice. Florian Wirtz, who replaced Gakpo during the derby, offers more dynamism and creativity, while Alexander Isak brings a proven goal threat. The pressure is on Gakpo to either respond and reclaim his position or make way for alternatives who may better serve Liverpool’s attacking ambitions.
Slot’s approach will need careful management, balancing squad harmony with the imperative to maintain top form. With the Champions League and Premier League campaigns underway, every selection counts, and the Dutchman’s continued poor run could reshape Liverpool’s forward line in the weeks ahead.
Liverpool remain unbeaten and in strong form overall, but individual performances such as Gakpo’s highlight the fine margins at the top of English football. The coming weeks will reveal whether he can regain his confidence or if Liverpool’s alternatives will become the preferred option.
