Henrik Pedersen has provided an update on Sheffield Wednesday's latest financial issues
Henrik Pedersen has eased fears that Sheffield Wednesday players will not train next week after they went unpaid for September.
The Danish coach has confirmed that there are still 11 players in the first team squad who have not been paid last month’s wages.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has come under fire from supporters for his mismanagement of the Owls, with wages not being paid on time becoming a persistent issue.
It was back in March when this first occurred, but it has now happened on multiple occasions, which directly led to a number of players departing in the summer by terminating their contracts.
It was reported earlier this week that some Sheffield Wednesday players are considering refusing to train next week following this latest wages issue.
Pedersen has confirmed that there are still 11 players awaiting their wages for the month of September, and that he has held talks with each of them.
He is hopeful that the players will continue with their training plans for next week as they need to remain in good shape through the international break.
“We have a group that’s 11 players that’s not been paid,” said Pedersen, via Football Heaven on X.
“A lot of them have played a lot in our team this season and I have individual conversations with all of them.
“For how would next week look like because they have played a lot, some players will have an extra day off, some will be reducing their training, some will train normally, it depends on where they are.
“It was not a theme of the players now that they don’t want to train because they’ve not been paid.
“We want to make the optimal plan for the boys so everyone stays as fresh as possible Monday after the international break.”
It remains to be seen when these 11 players will be paid, with the club set to be sanctioned by the EFL for the failure.
It’s been a torrid year for Sheffield Wednesday, with financial issues hampering their ability to improve the team after a 12th place finish under Danny Rohl last season.
The Owls have earned just six points from their opening eight fixtures, which has left them sitting 23rd in the Championship, with only bitter rivals Sheffield United below them.
This is the club’s third year back in the second division, but they will be at risk of relegation if their form doesn’t improve.
Next up for Sheffield Wednesday is a home clash against Coventry City on Saturday in a 12.30pm kick-off.
The silence from Chansiri in recent weeks and months has been quite a big problem, and will only further entrench the supporters against him.
These financial issues are unacceptable for a Championship club, and the players deserve a lot better than to go unpaid.
Pedersen is also in a difficult position as he has to face questions about the team multiple times a week, so naturally he’ll be asked about it.
But it is not his role to make sure his players are paid on time, it should be Chansiri that is answering questions about Sheffield Wednesday’s financial problems as long as he remains the owner.
