Monday’s game - a 1-0 defeat to Getafe at the Bernabeu - brought an Alexander-Arnold horror show. The 27-year-old was substituted before the hour mark and savaged by his critics in the Spanish press.

Alvaro Arbeloa gave the former Liverpool right-back another chance to make amends however in the away game at Celta Vigo.

But the Englishman was beaten all ends up by Williot Swedberg in the lead-up to the Celta equaliser - scored by Borja Iglesias.

Alexander-Arnold misjudged a long ball down field and did nothing to prevent the Swede from setting up the goal.

Predictably that contribution brought out the barbs once again - with the Carrusel Deportivo programme being scathing in its remarks.

Trent 'a disaster' according to Spanish press

"He can't win a single duel," pundit Antonio Romero said according to Cadena Ser.

"I have no problem with the lad. It's obvious Trent has a good touch; it's obvious he delivers brilliant crosses. But at right-back he's a disaster. He doesn't use his body, he doesn't intercept, he doesn't sprint, he doesn't press, he doesn't play the offside trap..."

Aurelien Tchouameni scored the opening goal before Borja’s equaliser - and Real finally got over the line in injury time thanks to Fede Valverde.

But the result alone couldn’t prevent criticism of Alexander-Arnold’s display - with Dani Carvajal still waiting in the wings to replace him.

'He needs to be benched'

"He needs to be benched," presenter Dani Garrido said. "He lets the ball bounce and does something unbelievable. It's like letting someone go ahead in the elevator.”

And: "Swedberg just made him look bad,” continued Romero.

'He doesn't even break a sweat'

Former Real Madrid star Rafael Alkorta - a two-time La Liga winner also had plenty to say about Trent’s defensive techniques.

"He tries to get in front of the Celta player and avoid a penalty,” he said. "But he does things in slow motion, like he doesn't even break a sweat.”

It’s clear Trent isn’t having it all his own way in his maiden Madrid season. He’s suffered multiple injury issues - as well as question marks being raised against his form.

Having left Liverpool last summer for a fee of £10m it’s been speculated that Madrid may even make moves to replace Trent in the off-season.
