The playmaker has endured an intriguing second season at Bramall Lane

Sheffield United's second season back in the Championship proved to be one of mixed fortunes under Ruben Selles and Chris Wilder, with the latter hoping for even more success at Bramall Lane in the near future.

This time 12 months ago, United came agonisingly close to achieving a first-time promotion back to the Premier League before losing the Championship play-off final in the most dramatic of fashions to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium.

After a summer of controversy under American investors, COH Sports, Wilder was reinstated months after originally being dismissed and replaced by Selles, who lost all six of his competitive matches in charge of the S2 outfit in August and September 2025.

Whilst initially able to steer the Blades clear of a potential relegation battle to League One in the second half of the season, Wilder has often set his stall out about how he wants his squad to look heading into the 2026/27 campaign, with the future of some players such as Tom Davies and Danny Ings already well-documented, whilst it also remains to be seen what the upcoming weeks and months look like for Gustavo Hamer amid continued transfer interest.

However, there has now been some form of clarity on how fellow playmaker and another ex-Coventry City star now plying his trade in the Steel City feels about continuing to play a starring role in the club's latest rebuilding process under the 58-year-old's management.

Despite United's overall 13th-place finish, having accumulated 60 points from their 46 matches, Callum O'Hare proved to be the ultimate shining light at Bramall Lane for his contributions across the board.

The 28-year-old playmaker hit double-figures for goal contributions last term after being snapped up on a free transfer once his contract with the Sky Blues expired two years ago, and bettered those numbers this season with eight goals and eight assists in 45 league appearances.

As a result, he unsurprisingly scooped three awards at United's end-of-season awards ceremony, as well as being voted player of the year at the Sheffield Star's own awards ceremony.

When asked by the aforementioned publication about what the future holds from his perspective as he has two years left on his current contract, whilst Wilder continues to send out messages about a squad reshuffle, O'Hare said: "I’ve found it really good here.

“Honestly, I didn't know what to expect before I came because I didn't really know many people who had lived in Sheffield. So it was hard to ask. But obviously I spoke with Gus (Hamer) and he said nothing but good things about the club," he added.

“That got me excited. And since I've been here, I've really enjoyed it. So of course, I’d like to continue that. Hopefully we can build again next year and we’ll see what happens.”

Sheffield United and Callum O'Hare will fancy their chances of a strong campaign in 2026/27

If O'Hare can continue his impressive form into another full season under Wilder, then United will fancy their chances as a collective of enjoying a much stronger campaign next time around.

They ended the season strongly with three wins in the final five matches, including victories over Hull City and Derby County, who have finished in, or were challenging for the play-offs respectively, and it is crucial such momentum continues into 2026/27.

Even if they were to lose the services of Hamer, the expected high sum of cash which the Blades are likely to receive will only further help Wilder's ability to recruit new important figures across several departments.

Furthermore, the chances of gaining promotion to the Premier League for all 24 clubs will increase next year due to an inflated play-off format, with the seventh and eighth-placed finishers also involved in 'eliminator' ties before the staple semi-finals and final at Wembley.
