The Boro academy graduate's immediate future has been up for debate in recent weeks

Middlesbrough have endured quite an emotional season, and are now preparing for a first full campaign under the management of Kim Hellberg at the Riverside Stadium.

It has been well-documented what the Reds have gone through in the 2025/26 Championship season both on and off the pitch, but ultimately, it ended in heartbreak under the Wembley arch on Saturday afternoon as Oli McBurnie capitalised on a grave error from Sol Brynn to send Hull City to the Premier League at their expense.

Of course, Boro were reinstated to feature in the play-off final in controversial and dramatic circumstances themselves following the spygate scandal which led to Southampton's expulsion from the competition just days beforehand.

However, those in the North East will be hoping to put the drama of the past few days and weeks behind them as they look to recruit smartly once again in a bid to remain a promotion front-runner in next season's second tier.

Indeed, next term will see the play-offs expanded to six teams instead of four, whilst the trio of West Ham United, Burnley and Wolves - managed by Hellberg's successor at Boro, Rob Edwards - will all be expected to mount first-time promotion bids back to the top-flight due to the calibre of squads and finances at their respective disposals.

With the transfer window opening in a matter of days also, many will be intrigued to see if Middlesbrough stand any chance of retaining academy graduate, Hayden Hackney, due to continued interest from Premier League clubs amid the club's North London heartache.

Hackney wasn't the only man who felt the loss deeper than most, though, with captain Dael Fry also a homegrown figure, and an update has since emerged on his contract situation.

How Dael Fry really feels about Middlesbrough contract extension ahead of 2026/27 campaign

The 28-year-old is now closing in on the 300-appearance milestone for his boyhood club, having made his debut against Preston North End back in August 2016, before being officially named club captain last summer following the exit of Jonny Howson.

Fry signed his most recent contract extension three years ago, with the deal running until the end of the current season, while new terms are yet to be agreed despite the fact he has featured in 34 matches across all competitions this season.

It has now been reported by the Northern Echo that an extension clause was inserted in the aforementioned deal, which would have been triggered if Boro overcame the Tigers in North London, although there is still a desire from all parties to resolve negotiations before the expiration date of June 30th, and talks have commenced as a result.

It is said that Hellberg values the centre-back extremely highly, whilst Fry still, unsurprisingly, harbours ambitions of a promotion with his boyhood club, having failed to make a Premier League appearance during the 2016/17 campaign when Boro were relegated.

Retaining Dael Fry for 2026/27 feels a no-brainer for Middlesbrough and Kim Hellberg

Despite failing to clinch promotion on two fronts this season, Middlesbrough excelled from a defensive point of view, only conceding 47 times in their 46 regular-season games, with the likes of Fry, Luke Ayling and Adilson Malanda earning heaps of praise as a result.

Therefore, an extension on the Teesside native's contract feels like a must for Hellberg, especially as there will be extra fuel to achieve promotion next term after what has occurred from March onwards at the Riverside.

Remarkably, Capology also ESTIMATE that Fry is one of the lowest earners on Steve Gibson's payroll with a weekly pay packet of £5,577 per week, meaning that it would also not take much out of the club's budget to reward their long-serving captain at this moment in time.
