The Foxes finished 18th in the Premier League 12 months ago, and have gone down for a second season in a row.

The Leicestershire outfit have not competed in the third tier of English football since 2009, and even won the top flight title as recently as 2016 before going on to compete in Europe and lift the FA Cup, too - but their demise over the last couple of years has been startling.

Gary Rowett oversaw the end of the term, with his side ending up five points adrift of safety after a disastrous run of form.

Leicester also received a six point deduction penalty from the EFL, which ultimately proved decisive in their battle to avoid the drop.

The club will now be hoping for a swift return to the Championship next season, with the summer transfer window set to be a busy period at the King Power Stadium ahead of a significant rebuild both on and off-the-pitch.

Jamie Vardy eyes Leicester City return

It has been reported by Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Leicestershire Live, that Jamie Vardy is interested in a return to the Foxes.

It is believed that the striker is keen on a player-coach role with Leicester just 12 months on from his exit from the King Power.

Vardy made the switch to Cremonese last year following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

He ended a remarkable 13-year stint with the team in which he won the Premier League and the FA Cup, cementing his place as one of Leicester’s best ever players.

And the 39-year-old could now be set for a return after just one season in Serie A, as he is expected to depart Cremonese at the end of the campaign.

The former England international signed a one-year contract with Cremonese last summer, which included the option for another season if they stayed up.

But the Italian side are at risk of suffering relegation, with the team 18th in the table and one point adrift of safety with just two games to go.

Vardy has made 27 appearances in the league this season, contributing six goals and two assists.

He found the back of the net as Cremonese aided their survival hopes with a 3-0 win last weekend against Pisa.

However, it’s understood that Vardy’s preference is now a return to his former club, where he could take up a dual role.

But no final decision has yet been made, with Serie A set to conclude on 24 May.

Jamie Vardy return could have storybook ending

Vardy cemented his legacy at Leicester over an impressive 13-year stint, but relegation meant that it all ended on a bit of a sour note.

However, he could come back this summer and help propel Leicester back to the Championship, which would give him a more storybook ending to his career.

While the 39-year-old isn’t the same player he once was, he’s still shown in the last couple of seasons that he can contribute plenty, so he would be a great signing to boost their promotion bid.

Leicester have endured a significant fall from grace, and they don’t have the strongest financial position, so this could be a very welcome move to get the club back on track while restoring a sorely-absent feel-good factor among supporters.
