Birmingham City's pursuit of a Rangers double swoop has suffered a setback
Birmingham City will have to wait on any permanent moves for Rangers duo Kieran Dowell and Ben Davies this summer.
According to Birmingham Live, the Blues are interested in permanent deals for the pair after they spent last season on loan at St. Andrew’s.
Davies arrived last summer, and featured 35 times in League One as the team clinched the title on their way to promotion.
Meanwhile, Dowell signed on loan during the January market, contributing five goals and four assists in 19 league games, with Birmingham earning a record points tally of 111.
It is believed that new Rangers boss Russell Martin is set to give both Davies and Dowell a chance in pre-season.
It has been reported that Birmingham are interested in permanent deals to sign the pair.
However, their pursuit will have to wait just yet, with Martin planning to take a closer look at both players before making any decision over their futures.
Both Dowell and Davies are entering the final year of their contract with the Glasgow outfit, meaning they could become free agents in 2026.
This could open the door to a sale, as Rangers may want to avoid losing them for nothing in 12 months’ time.
But it remains to be seen whether a deal can be agreed this window, with the Scottish giants returning for pre-season last Monday.
Birmingham are preparing for life back in the Championship after sealing automatic promotion last season.
The Blues have already completed moves for Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampstead from Bristol City and Twente FC, respectively, after they spent last season on loan at St. Andrew's.
Phil Neumann will also finally join up with Chris Davies’ side following his January pre-contract agreement.
Birmingham will discover their opening game of their Championship return this Thursday, with the season set to begin the opening weekend of August.
Given Davies and Dowell are both entering the final 12 months of their time at Rangers, it could motivate the Scottish club to sell this summer.
It remains to be seen what Martin’s plans are for the Premiership side given he has just been appointed manager.
But it could take a couple of weeks before we see any movement for a deal if he wants to take a good look at both players in pre-season.
Getting permanent deals done would be good business for Birmingham, especially if they can be secured at a reasonable fee due to their expiring deals.
