Chelsea are confident they can earn more than £300 million from player sales by the end of the summer transfer window.

Following the announcement of Jordan Henderson’s signing from Brentford earlier this week, Chelsea have so far confirmed nine summer arrivals.

This includes the likes of Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda, who joined the club on pre-agreed deals.

The list may even get bigger with Chelsea closing in on a deal for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria, with an agreement in place worth £16.3m plus add-ons.

There is no denying that the bloated squad has become a problem for new manager Xabi Alonso.

Alonso, for example, has already admitted that he would like to have “four to five” centre-backs in his squad for the new season.

Chelsea currently have 10 players in this position, so the club are expected to reduce the number of options in the coming weeks.

Trevoh Chalobah looks set to be the first among these centre-backs to make a summer exit, after being seen in Italy on Wednesday ahead of a potential move to Como.

If it goes through, Chalobah will be Chelsea’s fifth summer outgoing overall, following Andrey Santos (Manchester United), Marc Cucurella (Real Madrid), Tyrique George (Everton), and Alejandro Garnacho (loan - Aston Villa).

Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi have been left out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Australia and Asia, and are both expected to leave, having been valued at £30m and £25m, respectively.

The younger Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino, meanwhile, could end up leaving on loan.

As much as it is about trimming the squad, player sales are necessary for Chelsea to comply with Premier League financial rules.

Chelsea have unsurprisingly been the Premier League's biggest spenders this summer, having splashed €388.95m (£333.6m) on player transfers, according to Transfermarkt.

This results in a €256.65m (£220.1m) net spend so far.

According to The Athletic, however, Chelsea remain confident they can recoup over £300m in outgoings during this window.

This figure would offset most of the club’s spending, but achieving this is easier said than done.

Given Chelsea’s obvious need to offload players, the club may be in an unfavourable position in transfer negotiations.

In certain positions, such as centre-backs, Chelsea just have too many players to keep.

The strikers are in a similar situation. Joao Pedro looks set to be first choice, with Danny Welbeck also signed this summer. This leaves the likes of Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, Nicolas Jackson, and possibly Dastan Satpayev to compete for backup roles.

Guiu, Delap and Jackson are all facing uncertain futures and at least two are likely to depart before the transfer window closes.
