The Japanese forward has again become the subject of exit talk

Birmingham City's transfer activity has been put under the spotlight in recent times, with Knighthead Capital Management providing Chris Davies with significant backing in the market.

The 41-year-old is about to lead Blues into his third season as manager, and a second successive term in the Championship after their record-breaking title success in 2024/25.

During his time at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, Birmingham have already smashed their transfer record by some distance, which came when Jay Stansfield was permanently signed from Premier League side Fulham on a seven-year contract.

Upon their return to the second tier 12 months ago, Davies oversaw the first of two major squad reshuffles, and it was one which only added to the optimism and hype which surrounded the club at that particular moment.

14 additions on a permanent or loan basis were made last summer, whilst two have already been confirmed this year, with Jhon Solis seeing his initial loan from Girona FC turned permanent, while Dael Fry immediately moved to the West Midlands upon the expiration of his Middlesbrough contract.

However, after playing out two pre-season friendlies against Huddersfield Town and Solihull Moors, Davies has issued clarification on the future of Kyogo Furuhashi, who struggled massively in his first Championship season following a move from Stade Rennais.

Kyogo had previously scored for fun with Celtic, but has lost his goalscoring touch due to various circumstances in the past 18 months.

With that said, Football League World have looked at how much money the 31-year-old earns in B9.

Kyogo was signed from the Brittany-based Ligue 1 outfit 12 months ago in a deal reportedly worth up to £10m, with numerous outlets have also claimed that the initial fee was significantly less.

However, the 23-time international was never fully able to get over his poor start in front of goal, despite netting in his second competitive game with a simple finish against Sheffield United in the EFL Cup.

His two other strikes for the season came against Cambridge United in the FA Cup, and then later in January in a 2-0 success against Sheffield Wednesday.

However, Kyogo's season was curtailed in April due to a shoulder injury, but he returned to action with a late brace against the Terriers last Friday in the Algarve, which prompted mixed reactions.

Yet whilst Davies played two 'teams' against the National League side on Wednesday, the forward, like left-back, Kai Wagner, was not selected in the overall squad, with the Blues boss revealing afterwards: “Kai and Kyogo, things will be clearer with those two in the next couple of days,”

“There’s been a few things happening in the background and that will become clearer in the next 48 hours but tonight wasn’t a night to include them.”

Kyogo was heavily linked with a return to Celtic in January, before such rumours were quashed by Martin O'Neill, as well as divisional rivals, Swansea City.

Even though it is ESTIMATED by Capology that the forward earns £35,000 per week, a report from the Herald earlier in 2026 claimed that his wages were higher, and a £40,000 weekly salary was said to be a stumbling block for the Scottish champions.

Although it remains to be seen what Kyogo's potential destination may be in the coming days, it will also be intriguing to see how much money Blues are able to recoup for the Japanese, who still has two years left to run on his contract.

Even prior to receiving surgery on his recurring shoulder issue, the forward had already fallen down Davies' pecking order, and many will expect January signing, August Priske, to take up the mantle as a starting striker this season.

As such, the aforementioned wages for a third or fourth-choice striker in the Championship aren't justifiable, especially with the newly-introduced Squad Cost Rules, which limits clubs to a spend of up to 85% on transfer fees and wages, relative to their income stream.
