The last few games have not been the best for New York City FC. After losing to Vancouver Whitecaps FC this past weekend, the team is now winless in their last three matches. They will need to rebound in Major League Soccer this weekend, but before then, it would be great if they could get a win in the U.S. Open Cup when they begin the 2026 journey against Westchester SC.
As fans will recall, NYCFC had the shocking loss against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC last season in the Round of 32. The Pigeons normally entered in that round, so it was not the best look to lose that game. In fact, the last time the Queens side won the U.S. Open Cup was in 2022, when they reached the quarterfinals. While the club had a good run in 2024, NYCFC II was the team that played in the tournament.
If the first team fails to win the upcoming Round of 32 match, then that would be a poor look. The roster, even if multiple young and bench players play, is completely capable of beating Westchester, a USL League One side. The fellow New York team is rather young, for they began play last season, ending the campaign in last place. This year, they currently sit in fifth place in the standings that contains 17 teams. But again, the Boys in Blue should beat a team in the third tier.
Alas, for some unknown reason, the U.S. Open Cup has not been kind to NYCFC. There have been multiple years where the Pigeons were knocked out of the tournament in the first round that they played in, and sometimes it was by teams not in Major League Soccer. Who could forget those early years when the NY Cosmos caused their exit? Hence, everyone must be focused, and some of the usual starters should probably play.

NYCFC supporters can head to Mount Vernon Memorial Field in Mount Vernon to catch the teams in action. The stadium is not too far away for those in or close to the city, for it is about 12.7 miles from Yankee Stadium. Traffic must be considered.
If NYCFC fans cannot watch or listen to the game, then they can follow along via MLS Soccer’s timeline and NYCFC’s X account. Additionally, the club will post updates here and there on Facebook.
This would be a great match for Pascal Jansen to start some of the players who do not normally start or barely get any minutes. Jonathan Shore, who was superb at the beginning of 2025 and has always been a strong player off the bench, is the first one that comes to mind for those who should start. He could also go with Talles Magno, but the winger should play on the wings, and Seymour Reid should start up front and center.
