Spain take on Cape Verde in their first game of the 2026 World Cup, and will be feeling confident after their Euro 2024 tournament triumph.
Luis de la Fuente’s side are ranked number two in the FIFA rankings while Cape Verde are ranked 67, and are the second smallest nation competing at the tournament behind Curacao.
Here’s what you need to know ahead of the game…

Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are both fit for the game but it seems unlikely that either will start the match. Yamal missed the last month of the season with Barcelona due to a hamstring issue, while Williams has not played since May 10 after picking up a hamstring issue too.
Spain XI (4-3-3): Simon; Llorente, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Ruiz, Rodri, Pedri; Torres, Oyarzabal, Baena
Cape Verde (4-2-3-1): Vozinha; Moreira, Costa, Pico, Paulo; Semedo, Pina; Mendes, Monteiro, Cabral; Dailon
Spain are in quite staggering form and have not lost a game since March 2024, which was before they even won the Euros. They will feel they should win this game, and quite comfortably too.
Cape Verde won their last friendly before the tournament, beating Serbia 3-0. They also took another big scalp just a few months ago, beating Cameroon at the end of last year. They will want to give a good account of themselves.
Spain boss de la Fuente: “The level of performance has been exactly as we expected. These players are exceptionally talented, and every training session someone surprises you. The idea I had from the start remains unchanged, and we will continue with it tomorrow.
“I am very practical and focus on the short term. I never dreamed of being here; I dreamed of doing my job well every day. Personally and professionally, I am living the best moment of my life. I want to enjoy this experience with calmness and perspective. I am surrounded by outstanding people, and I have the very best alongside me.”
Cape Verde boss Bubista: “We want to enjoy these matches,” he said. “Qualification means more than just football, it’s a cultural achievement. We want to show our country to the world.
“We’re a team that play without fear… When we talk about our identity, we’re talking about who we are as a people. We like challenges, because we like overcoming difficulties.
“We want to show our identity as a team, which means being brave when we have the ball in attack.”
