Recent form

Spain go into the game knowing they need to win having failed to beat Cape Verde in their opening game.

Saudi Arabia held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their opening game thanks in part to a superb performance from goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais.

What’s been said?

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has defended midfielder Rodri from the criticism he has received: “It seems incredibly insulting to me that people would say that about the best player in the world (Rodri). Would people say that about others who are considered the best in the world? I think they wouldn’t dare.

“But because they’re Spanish, we say things about our own that we wouldn’t about others. Rodri is the best player in the world. Even at 50%, he is better than most other midfielders in the world. He brings clarity, vision, balance. Rodri is an inspiration for us.”

Saudi Arabia boss Georgios Donis: “It’s nice to have miracles in football and we’ve seen it many times. We’ve seen it in the World Cup, we’ve seen it in other tournaments, we’ve seen favourites losing against underdogs.

“It’s great to have great memories in our national team such as the game against Argentina.

“We have to play against one of the best teams in the world and it’s very important when you get to this sort of tournament and you have this sort of joy of playing against these teams to be able to enjoy those games, to respect the opponent but also not to respect them more than you should.”
