Manchester United are in line to strike a cut-price deal for Hugo Larsson after holding talks with the Eintracht Frankfurt maestro’s representatives, according to the latest report from Germany.

Midfield Maestro

Having been likened to Spanish superstar Rodri, Larsson has emerged as one of the most exciting midfielders in the Bundesliga since arriving from Malmö in 2023 in a club-record sale.

Possessing a 6’2″ frame, with surprising mobility for such a tall player, the Sweden international is a physical monster. Analyst Ben Mattinson praises his “insane running power and stamina”.

But Larsson is not just an enforcer who does his best work without the ball. Rather, the 22-year-old has the skillset to develop into an excellent anchor in midfield.

Mattinson contends he is “very composed on the ball and press resistant as he regularly receives the ball from deep and turns casually past pressing attackers.”

This pairing of technique and physical attributes is a rare combination, making Larsson an attractive proposition for a club in need of a new No.6 – such as the Red Devils.

United ramp up their pursuit

A report relayed by The Peoples Person revealed Manchester United, led by sporting director Jason Wilcox, and Newcastle United have “both held talks” with Larsson’s camp over a switch to England this summer.

Crucially, the Swede is understood to be open to leaving Eintracht Frankfurt for a bigger club. Arsenal and Liverpool have both been previously credited as suitors, while Atletico Madrid are also interested.

But in a major boost for Manchester United, and their counterparts on Tyneside, Frankfurt have slashed their asking price from last summer’s €60 million (£50m) valuation, according to Absolut Fussball.

“Internally, the asking price at the start of [last] season was €60 million. Such a sum is now considered rather unrealistic. Nevertheless, Eintracht Frankfurt wouldn’t let their midfielder go for less than he’s worth. Reportedly, at least €40 million would be required to even enter into serious negotiations,” the German outlet claims.

If INEOS have learned that a bid worth in the region of £34 million is all that is required to sign Larsson, it is little wonder they have chosen to open talks over a deal for a player who looks the perfect complement to Kobbie Mainoo.

Final Thoughts

With Manchester United having agreed a £50 million deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, followed by triggering the £35m release clause in Youri Tielemans’ contract with Aston Villa, the need for a powerhouse at the base of midfield is obvious.

If the Red Devils can add a third recruit to the mix, one who stands 6’2″ tall with pace and power in abundance, it will bring their total spend on the midfield rebuild to just under £120 million – or roughly the same price Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson.
