Xavi Espart is quickly becoming one of those La Masia names Barcelona fans want to follow closely, especially after Hansi Flick’s striking comparison with Philipp Lahm.

The 2007-born defender made his first-team debut in the Champions League against Newcastle, coming on in the final minutes of a demanding knockout match. It was only a short appearance, but it clearly left an impression on the Barcelona coach.

As quoted by AS, Flick said Espart reminded him of Lahm, a comparison the youngster accepted with humility. Espart said:

“It was so fast that there was barely time for him to give me two very clear messages. To trust myself and play with security. Obviously, I am very grateful for such a comparison, he is a great footballer, a compliment.”

A Barca profile that makes sense

The Kimmich comparison is also understandable because Espart is not a traditional full-back. With Barcelona, he plays at right-back, but with Spain Under-19s, he operates in midfield.

Asked where he feels comfortable, he said:

“I enjoy both. I have taken on both roles. With Spain I play as a midfielder and at Barca I do it as a full-back, but being such a dominant team, I feel like one more in midfield and I am very comfortable.”

That is exactly why Barca supporters should pay attention. Espart fits the modern full-back profile Flick seems to value: secure on the ball, tactically flexible, and capable of moving inside without looking lost.

He also revealed his Barca education clearly, saying:

“Being from Barca I have been lucky to see a team that has always taken very good care of the figure of midfielders, with real cracks. I grew up watching and looking at Busquets.”

The right-back position has not always felt fully settled, and a homegrown option with midfield instincts is naturally exciting.

Comparisons to Lahm and Kimmich, as flattering as they may be, are more hopeful than anything else at this stage, and Xavi has a long way to go.

He has already made an impression with his performances for Flick’s Barcelona in the limited opportunities he has had this season.
