Nigerian national team midfielder Alex Iwobi voiced his support for Morocco international Brahim Diaz following Morocco’s defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final and Diaz’s crucial missed penalty for Real Madrid. In the dying moments of the match, the referee awarded Morocco a penalty after a VAR review—a decision that sparked fierce protests from the Senegalese bench and led to a brief stoppage in play. When play resumed, Brahim Diaz saw his effort denied by Senegal’s goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, allowing the Teranga Lions to clinch their second continental title.
In his “AFCON Diaries” series, Alex Iwobi, currently playing for Fulham, made a point of consoling the Moroccan attacking midfielder, highlighting the unforgiving nature of elite football.
“Shout out to Brahim Diaz , of course, he'll be going through a lot right now. I mean, to take the penalty the way he did, if he scored, he would've been a hero, it's just the fact that he didn't. Please, allow him, it's football, but my message to him is what's done is done. He's had a good tournament. Do your thing in your club” said the Nigerian midfielder.Alex Iwobi also extended his congratulations to the Senegalese national team:
“Shout out to Senegal as well, they deserved the win, AFCON was memorable, it's an honour to represent my country, amazing to get the bronze.”
