Ilgiz Tantachev came under scrutiny after France's 1-0 win over Paraguay in the World Cup last 16 on Saturday. According to L'Équipe, the Uzbek official's control of a tight, physical contest was widely questioned.
The display revived memories for French supporters. Tantachev had also taken charge of the heated France v Argentina quarter-final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
That tie ended 1-0 to France. Tensions flared at the final whistle and Enzo Millot was sent off.
In all, 10 yellow cards were shown, five to France and five to Argentina. Tantachev later began the Spain-Morocco semi-final at the same tournament, but he was injured in the 12th minute and had to be replaced.
