Hugo Larsson on the final straight of the 2025/26 season, the recent rumours about his future and Sweden’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Hugo, belated congratulations on qualifying for the World Cup with Sweden. Has it sunk in yet that you might be making a first appearance at the tournament this summer?“Thanks very much! Even though a week has passed since the play-off and I didn’t make an appearance, it was a really great experience. To be there in person, working together on achieving that goal and having practically the entire country celebrating at the end was a lovely experience. The memories will stay with me for a long time. Before my next adventure, the only thing that matters to me are the six Eintracht games between now and the end of the season.”
What do you think Sweden are capable of achieving at the World Cup?“I think everyone had written us off after the [qualifying] group stage – and rightly so, if I’m honest. Nevertheless, when it really mattered, we proved to ourselves and everyone else just what we’re capable of. We gave a good account of ourselves, performed beyond our limits and showed we can achieve a great deal as underdogs this summer. Every footballer wants to play at a World Cup in their careers. It’s a wonderful opportunity.”
During the international break, there were rumours circulating that you wanted to leave the club. What did you make of those?“That was all one big misunderstanding. I’m completely happy at Eintracht Frankfurt. The club and I made that clear when I signed a very early, long-term contract extension last year. I see my future in Frankfurt, not just in the short term, but for the long term too. I’m very happy at the club and in the city, and I feel a strong affinity with the people here. I also still feel I can develop here and mature both as an athlete and as a person every day. I didn’t enjoy reading those reports because they weren’t true. Perhaps that’s just part and parcel of being a footballer.”What have you learned from the 2-2 draw with Köln?“Before the game, everyone in the stadium was expecting us to win – including us as a team. It was going really well when we went 2-0 up, but we were too vulnerable and open after that. Köln had the quality to punish us. We’ve had a look back at a lot of those moments in the game, particularly things we need to do differently in our upcoming matches.”
What do you think Eintracht can achieve between now and the end of the season?“We’re focusing on Wolfsburg next. VfL play in a similar way to Köln. We have another good opportunity there to give a better account of ourselves.”
