Iñaki Williams and Iker Muniain shared a warm reunion at Lezama as Muniain returned in charge of Salamanca. The pair exchanged greetings before getting back to work.
According to El Correo, Salamanca trained at Athletic’s base on Thursday after their Copa Federación tie at Derio the previous night. The club honoured Muniain’s request and offered the visitors a session before their journey home.
For a few hours the Salamanca squad moved through Lezama like one of the club’s own teams, with Muniain leading the drills. He knows the place inside out after 15 seasons in Athletic’s first team. His 560 official games rank third in club history, behind ‘Txopo’ Iribar and Óscar de Marcos.
The visit capped a distinctive return to Bizkaia. On Wednesday Salamanca beat Derio 3-5 after extra time to reach the quarter-finals, eliminating the side where Muniain began his coaching career last season, immediately after ending his playing days.
Once the handshakes were done, everyone drifted back to their duties. Williams headed to pitch 5 to start preparing for the derby against Alavés. Muniain rejoined the Salamanca staff, fully immersed in life on the other side of the touchline.
