Athletic’s trip to Levante was postponed on Thursday after a violent storm left the Ciutat de Valencia pitch unplayable. Captain Iñaki Williams said delaying the game was the most sensible option to protect calm, safety and wellbeing. He also referenced a similar episode at the ground two years ago.

According to as.com, torrential rain made it impossible for the ball to roll on the saturated turf as the storm raged.

The federation and both clubs will now look for a new date, with Thursday ruled out by a packed upcoming round and logistics. Athletic are due to host Alavés at San Mamés on Saturday.

On the night, Terzic had planned rotations, with Johaneko at no. two, both Williams starting on the bench, and Sannadi at no. nine.

Sporting director Mikel González said the club had been warned about the weather, even if the heaviest rain arrived late. He added that access issues meant they could not even step onto the pitch, and felt the outcome was obvious. He expected the fixture to be recovered later, expressing confidence it would be simple after the international break as neither side are in Europe.

Athletic will return on Thursday by plane from Valencia and train at 13:00 at Lezama. Despite the chaos, Levante managed to present a plaque honouring Athletic’s Spain world champions, Unai Simón, Nico Williams and Laporte, under the stadium structure to keep out the rain.
