Cristian Chivu spoke with great emotion before Inter Milan’s clash against Hellas Verona, reflecting on his personal connection to the city while also expressing deep solidarity with Josep Martinez following the tragic accident that has shaken the club this week.

In his pre-match interview with DAZN, via FCInterNews, the Inter coach said the team remains focused on building consistency and spirit while standing together during a difficult time.

Chivu’s message mixed tactical awareness with perspective, underlining the human side of football.

“Reaction and consistency are never guaranteed,” he said.

“We have to maintain what we did well against Fiorentina and keep improving. It’s in our DNA to always want to do better.”

When asked about his attacking options, the coach highlighted his belief in his younger players:

“Bonny and Sucic are both doing very well. So are Luis Henrique, Diouf and Pio Esposito. Even if the Frenchman hasn’t had many chances, his moment will come. I have a fantastic group who believe in our project and our dream.”

However, the most poignant moment came when Chivu discussed returning to Verona.

It was the city where he suffered a life-threatening head injury as a player in 2010.

“It was a rebirth for me,” he reflected.

“I realised what really matters in life isn’t winning or losing, but appreciating a journey that doesn’t last forever. Verona is a fantastic city. They saved my life here, and I’ll always be grateful.”

Chivu also sent a heartfelt message of support to Josep Martinez.

The Spaniard accidentally struck and killed an elderly man in a car accident earlier this week.

“We’re trying to help him,” Chivu said.

“As a club we’re also thinking of the victim’s family, but we must stay close to Pepo. He’ll face difficult moments ahead, and our support as a group will be essential.”
