The final weeks of the season will determine not just whether Inter Milan win Serie A but also the definitive verdict on Cristian Chivu and his first campaign in charge, with Gazzetta dello Sport placing the Romanian coach firmly under observation as the title race reaches its most critical stage.
Chivu has given every reason for optimism across the majority of his debut season.
He navigated Inter through one of the most difficult starts imaginable, taking over a squad still scarred by the Champions League final humiliation against PSG, and produced results that have kept the Nerazzurri at the top of Serie A for the vast majority of the campaign.
According to Gazzetta, via FCIN, his early-season handling deserves significant credit. When Inter stumbled against Udinese and Juventus in the opening weeks, Chivu showed the composure of a far more experienced manager.
Tactically, he was intelligent enough to build on what was already there rather than reinvent the wheel.
Indeed, using greater verticality to unlock an attacking roster stronger than the previous season’s.
The last month, however, has been more difficult.
Gazzetta point to a combination of unfortunate public statements.
And, indeed, an inability to find solutions for the dip in form among several key players.
The two-game run without a win, coming at the worst possible moment, has raised questions about his management of high-pressure situations.
Lautaro’s return offers a lifeline.
The captain’s presence alone should restore some of the collective confidence that has been missing in recent weeks.
Chivu can still finish the season with two trophies.
But Gazzetta make clear, he is now under observation too.
Sunday’s match against Roma is not just a six-pointer in the title race. It is a statement opportunity for the coach as much as the club.
