Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij has firmly rebuffed interest from Napoli in a surprise move during the January transfer window.
This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews. They report that the Partenopei contacted de Vrij’s representatives last month, but that he made clear he wants to stay at Inter.
Napoli have made signing a defender a priority during the January transfer window.
And the Campanians look to be right on the verge of signing former Manchester City and Real Madrid defender Danilo from Juventus.
However, FCIN reveal, Danilo isn’t the only defender who Napoli sounded out a move for.
Napoli’s priority has been to sign a defender with a lot of experience.
Partenopei coach Antonio Conte’s preference for working with readymade players over younger ones, particularly in defense, is no secret.
So the former Inter, Chelsea, and Juventus coach asked his club to sign a veteran defender he could definitely trust to slot in.
Danilo certainly fits the bill. But as FCIN reveal, the Brazilian wasn’t the only name on Napoli’s list.
Inter defender Stefan de Vrij is a player Conte has experience working with. The Dutchman started regularly during the coach’s two seasons in charge of the Nerazzurri.
De Vrij has also found very good form this season. That hasn’t escaped Conte’s notice.
Therefore, Napoli did make contact with de Vrij’s agent to see if he could be a plausible target for January.
However, FCIN reports, de Vrij made clear that he wanted to stay at Inter and wouldn’t consider a move.
