A stunning fresh claim has been made regarding Xabi Alonso and Manchester United as Michael Carrick’s future at the club remains unclear.
Despite the impressive transformation that he has overseen since being appointed as Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement in December last year, there are still no guarantees that Carrick will be handed the job on a permanent basis.
Carrick has taken charge of 10 games, winning seven, drawing two and losing just one. In a short span of time, he and his coaching staff have implemented an attractive and front-footed style of play that current has United on the cusp of a sensational return to the Champions League.
Heading into Monday’s meeting with Leeds United at Old Trafford, United sit in third place in the Premier League table, one point above Aston Villa and six adrift of Manchester City. There are growing calls for the club to keep Carrick, with a large number of the players seemingly in favour of it.
African duo Bryan Mbeumo and Amad recently joined the bandwagon, urging the club to retain Carrick beyond the end of the campaign. But United insist no knee-jerk decisions will be made, and an appointment will only happen once all the available options have been considered.
Alonso is one of the elite managers who are currently out of a job and according to Football Transfers, he has held talks with United and other top English clubs about a return to management.
Football Transfers say, “Alonso has emerged as a strong contender to replace Arne Slot if the Dutchman is sacked by Liverpool, while we have been informed that he has been earmarked as Paris Saint-Germain’s preferred successor to Luis Enrique if the 55-year-old departs amid significant interest from Real Madrid.”
“Furthermore, sources have also told us that Alonso has already spoken to Manchester City, Manchester United, Benfica, Sporting CP and Porto ahead of this summer.”
It’s said that Alonso has yet to make a decision on his preferred club for next season but he is eager to return to the dugout as soon as possible.
Liverpool is seen as Alonso’s most likely destination as pressure mounts on Slot. But a move to either of the Manchester clubs has not been ruled out.
The 44-year-old has been out of a job since January, when he parted ways with Real Madrid after less than eight months in charge.
Alonso won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 and replaced Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu last summer.
