Iran's national team left a new letter in the dressing room after their 1-1 draw with Egypt in Seattle, expressing pride and thanks to supporters. According to L'Équipe, the note was written in English and broadcast by Iranian state television.
Team Melli also thanked the city of Seattle for its hospitality, mirroring a similar message that praised Los Angeles after the 0-0 draw with Belgium last Sunday. Iran sit third in their group and must wait to learn whether they rank among the best third-placed sides to reach the last 16.
The letter said the players come from a land that for thousands of years has valued honour above victory. It added that football is not only about results, but a test of character, and thanked Iranians who have given their hearts and voices to the country, before concluding, "L'Iran est toujours debout."
The message also carried annotations linked to the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel since 28 February. In red, the authors wrote "+#168+" and "+#Minab+", referencing the Iranian locality where a school was bombed on 28 February, killing 155 people including 120 children, according to Iranian authorities, who blamed the United States.
The New York Times reports that the missile was fired by the US military after a targeting error. The US military has opened an investigation.
