Alexander Isak is “getting closer and closer” to making his return from a broken leg as Arne Slot delivered an injury update on his Liverpool squad on Tuesday.
The Swedish striker has been sidelined since suffering a fractured fibula in December, which required him to undergo surgery.
The British record signing undertook individual training this week ahead of the Reds’ Champions League meeting with Galatasaray on Wednesday as he continues on the road to recovery.
Slot would not put a date on his possible return, but confirmed that Isak will not feature against the Turkish outfit or Brighton in the Premier League this weekend.
“Alex is not available for tomorrow but the fact you see him on the pitch tells you that he gets closer and closer to joining us again,” the Dutchman said in his pre-match press conference.
“Not really [any timeframe on his return] but he will not be available for Saturday as well. When you don’t train with the team yet you are not ready to play and as we all know if you have done for months on the individual sessions it is also a step up to train with the team and when you train with the team again it is quite a step up to playing in the Premier League or Champions League.”
Ibrahima Konate is set to be involved after missing Sunday’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur with a hamstring injury, while Joe Gomez could make the matchday squad despite missing training on Tuesday.
“[Konate] is declared completely fit, he doesn’t feel the discomfort anymore,” Slot said. “So he is ready to start and hopefully to fulfill 90 minutes, or more if needed. That’s what we have to find out tomorrow.
“[Gomez] wasn’t ready to train today. He had too many issues after the last game although he had the issues after the Galatasaray.
“[It] wasn’t the plan to play against Tottenham but Ibou felt his hamstring and didn’t want to risk him. He is going to try tomorrow, Joe.”
