A few days after Germany crashed out of the World Cup against Paraguay, captain Joshua Kimmich has posted an emotional statement reacting to the disappointment.
After being part of the Germany sides that were eliminated in the group stage at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the 31-year-old Bayern Munich star has been hit hard by yet another disappointing tournament.
“Right now I just feel empty and I don’t really feel like reaching out. But it’s part of it to face these situations as well. Together, we had set out to play a very successful World Cup, to represent Germany with dignity, and to make a small contribution to a positive development in our country. And we failed. Again. And it destroys me,” Kimmich wrote on Instagram.
“As proud as I am to be the captain of this team and as special as it was for me to lead them into the tournament, the disappointment about how things went for us is just as big.”
As he did after the match, the 31-year-old made it clear that he's not considering retiring from international duty.
“Giving up is never an option for me. But to get back to feeling clear again, I will definitely need more than just a few days,” he added.
“Thank you to everyone who believed in us and supported us. We would have liked to give you – and ourselves – much more back.”
