The Hatters narrowly missed out on a play-off place in League One last season, and they achieved success in the EFL Trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Wilshere’s side beat Stockport County in the final to win the competition for the second time in their history.

But they finished one point outside of the top six, coming seventh in the table, so have a clear goal of improving on that in 2026/27 in order to contend for promotion.

This is the former Arsenal star’s first role in management since retiring, having previously worked as a coach at Norwich City and at underage level for the Gunners.

Luton suffered back-to-back relegations to fall from the Premier League to the third tier in 2024 and 2025, so will be keen to get back to the second division as quickly as possible.

Wilshere has claimed that it’s important for him to be able to take naps while working in his office at Luton because there are times where he doesn’t have the chance to get home instead.

He believes that the role of coach is far more time-consuming than when he was a player, and that he is focused on how to improve the team 100 percent of the time.

“It’s important to get a siesta when you can because coaching consumes your whole day,” said Wilshere, via The Sun.

“As a player, you train and go home.

“As a coach, you’re literally 24/7 on your laptop looking at clips, medical science, scouting and tactics.

“It never stops.”

Wilshere took over at Luton 11 months ago, replacing Matt Bloomfield after a disappointing start to life in League One last year.

The former midfielder is targeting a promotion fight this season, and his side got off to a dramatic start to the campaign last weekend with a 4-3 victory against Reading.

The Royals were ahead 3-1 at half-time, but a brace from Kasey Palmer and a 96th minute strike from Gideon Kodua sealed a comeback victory.

Luton Town’s summer signings

Luton have brought in six signings this summer in a bid to bolster their first team squad and their chances of a return to the Championship.

Callum Marshall and Kodua have both arrived from West Ham, while Palmer and George Johsnton also sealed permanent moves.

Harrison Ashby and Emilio Lawrence signed on loan from Newcastle United and Manchester City, respectively.

The Hatters have until 1 September to complete any remaining transfer business before the market closes for the rest of the calendar year.

Jack Wilshere has the right work ethic to make it as a coach

Marcelo Bielsa also had a sleeping area during his time at Leeds United, and the Argentine is known as one of the hardest working coaches in the game.

So he is in good company when it comes to having a strong work ethic, and Luton fans will appreciate the effort he is putting in.

The dramatic win over Luton also shows that his team will work hard on the pitch for him, as they pushed right until the end to come from behind in their opening game.

If Wilshere can show he can lead the club to promotion, then that would be a great step forward for both the Hatters and his own career as a coach.
